Wound Care and Healing

A topical antimicrobial that reduces wound bacterial burden without compromising healing capacity is a clinical imperative.

Dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and aesthetic practitioners are focused on optimizing wound healing, minimizing pain, and achieving optimal outcomes, including minimal scarring. Therefore, wound care should address all of these factors: preventing and treating infection, minimizing inflammation and scarring, while the antiseptics and healing agents used must be non-toxic to normal tissue.

A substance that meets all of these requirements cannot be sourced externally but must originate from within the body. Fortunately, our bodies already produce such a substance: hypochlorous acid (HOCl), generated by neutrophils to protect against invading pathogens and at the site of wounds. HOCl aids in wound care and healing.

Discovered 188 years ago and first applied in World War I to treat soldiers’ wounds, it was only many years later that the endogenous production of HOCl was recognized. Scientists, research institutions, and healthcare organizations have been working diligently to create pure HOCl, identical to that produced by the body, for use in wound care and disinfection. Although externally produced HOCl is not entirely pure, the results have been highly effective, and the FDA has approved (highly purified) products for wound care, healing, ocular care, and veterinary care.

Over 3,000 research articles in scientific journals report the benefits of topical HOCl in enhancing wound healing and the biochemical and physiological mechanisms involved in these processes. In addition to its antimicrobial properties, HOCl accelerates wound healing, restores tissue structure, and minimizes scarring.

HOCl has demonstrated efficacy before, during, and after dermatological and aesthetic procedures. It is effective and safe for preoperative skin and mucosal disinfection and cleansing. HOCl actively participates in all three phases of wound healing: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling by killing bacteria, avoiding the creation of antibiotic resistance, breaking down biofilms, reducing inflammation and pain, increasing oxidation to promote collagen formation and new capillary growth, and controlling hyperproliferative responses that lead to keloid and hypertrophic scars.

We now have the best wound healing and care material, which is completely natural and therefore causes no harm to the body.

HOCl is involved in all three phases of wound healing: hemostasis and inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. HOCl exhibits immediate antimicrobial activity, mild hemostasis, reduced inflammation, and promotes proliferation, increased oxygenation for collagen and new blood vessel formation, as well as reduced itching and scarring.

HOCl reduces itching and pain by 50% on the first day and 85% on the third day (Adapted from Gold M et al. 2019 “HOCl: The future gold standard for wound care and scar management in dermatological and aesthetic procedures” and other studies).

Beyond its antimicrobial properties, HOCl accelerates wound healing, restores tissue structure, and minimizes scarring (Source: Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. 2019).

Unlike commonly used antiseptics such as povidone-iodine and chlorhexidine, HOCl does not hinder the healing process (Source: Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. 2019).

The highly effective antimicrobial properties of HOCl have been tested by the Cantacuzino Institute in Romania and the Japanese Functional Water Association, confirming the breadth and speed of bacterial inactivation. They also highlighted the exceptionally high efficacy of HOCl against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, both commonly associated with both acute and chronic wound infections.

MiraChlor is the first pure HOCl successfully researched and manufactured by Letus Corporation using the achievements of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution – Artificial Intelligence with a new patented formula in the United States. The HOCl created by Letus is identical to endogenous HOCl, free from residual toxic substances or byproducts of the manufacturing process.
