Proper Disinfection: Protecting Yourself During a Pandemic

Since the outbreak of the pandemic in early 2020, Vietnam has recorded 8,407,776 cases, including 42,078 deaths (as of March 23, 2022). This number continues to rise, causing concern for the public and burdening the healthcare system.

According to UNICEF, the COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets, when droplets from an infected person’s mouth or nose (produced when they cough, sneeze, talk, or sing) enter the mouth, nose, or eyes of people nearby. Many people who are infected with the virus can spread it to others, even if they have no symptoms. Additionally, we can also contract COVID-19 after touching surfaces contaminated with the virus. These viruses can survive on surfaces for several hours to several days. So how can we kill the virus and prevent infection? Using disinfectants is one way to protect yourself and your family from the virus.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a list of disinfectants that can be used against COVID-19, including sprays, concentrates, and convenient wipes. Each product has been proven effective against viruses that are harder to kill than the virus that causes COVID-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that hypochlorous acid (HOCl) has emerged during the current pandemic as the most powerful and environmentally friendly disinfectant. It is also listed by the EPA as an effective COVID-19 killer and is effective against many human pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts, spores, etc. In recent years, there has been a lot of compelling evidence for the efficacy of pure, stable HOCl preparations in inactivating even the most resistant infectious agents, such as BSE Prions or HPV16 virus (both of which are completely unaffected by existing disinfectants on the EML list). This once again proves that HOCl deserves a place in every public health program as a basic tool for controlling infectious diseases.

Table: Comparison of killing time of HOCl, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide

Conclusion: The ability to kill bacteria of bleach and hydrogen peroxide is significantly inferior to HOCl.

Areas to pay attention to for regular disinfection:

  • For individuals: disinfect hands, body, personal belongings (masks, clothes, phones, etc.)
  • For families: disinfect utensils, household items, clean floors with disinfectants, and other necessary areas.
  • For workplaces and schools: frequently touched areas such as doorknobs, stair railings, elevator buttons, light switches, computer keyboards, remote controls, shared phones…

Besides washing hands and using disinfectants, we also need to regularly wear masks, keep a safe distance when communicating, ensure a ventilated environment, increase physical activity, exercise, and maintain a healthy diet. All of these actions will contribute to protecting the health of ourselves and those around us during the COVID-19 pandemic.
